Moon Palace Books is a brand new independent bookstore tucked behind Peace Coffee and the Trylon Microcinema on 33rd and Minnehaha.
Store owner Angela Schwesnedl had been considering opening her own store for a while: she has a great passion for books and had been looking for a space when she noticed that the Minnehaha space was available.
Schwesnedl says that opening her own bookstore has been a challenging learning experience and that the neighborhood has been really excited and supportive since the store opened in October. A lot of Moon Palace's collection of new and used books has been contributed by community members bringing in a variety of books to help the store's already vast collection grow. Moon Palace offers store credit for bringing in used books; the store's well-curated selection has a little bit of everything, including works by local authors.
Moon Palace Books may be small, but it has plenty of room for book signings, book clubs and discussions, and events. Moon Palace also offers sells e-books through the store website and offers shoppers the ability to purchase books online and pick them up in the store.
Schwesnedl lives in the area and says that it has great energy and is an ideal place for helping to encourage reading and local commerce within the community. “A lot of people are into buying local and shopping in their own community, and I figure that if you’re into that kind of thing, then this is the place to be."
