Minneapolis women jailed in Israel

Members of the Anti War Committee delegation were jailed upon their arrival in Israel.

August 02, 2009

UPDATE: Katrina Plotz and Sarah Martin are on a plane, en route to MSP, scheduled to arrive early afternoon.

Two Minneapolis women, Katrina Plotz and Sarah Martin, are in jail in Israel after being refused entry to the country. A third, Karen Sullivan, was deported August 1 and was en route back to the Twin Cities on Sunday. They were deported after Israeli officials, checking the internet for information about passengers arriving in Israel, discovered that they intended to visit the Palestinian territories, according to Jess Sundin of the Anti-War Committee.

Martin, age 69, lives in Minneapolis and is affiliated with Women Against Military Madness. She is a retired nurse and a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Plotz, age 40, also lives in the Twin Cities, and is a teacher. (FULL DISCLOSURE: Katrina Plotz has written for the TC Daily Planet.)

According to Sundin, Israeli officials told the three that they were security risks and would not be allowed to enter the country. They were held at the airport and told to sign a paper that said they were leaving voluntarily. Plotz and Martin refused to sign, and were then jailed and told they would be handcuffed and forcibly deported, according to Sundin.

Sullivan was escorted onto a plane by armed guards at about 3:30 p.m., Minnesota time, on Saturday (11:30 p.m. in Israel). According to Sundin, the U.S. embassy in Israel said that Plotz and Martin may be put on a plane at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The three were on a delegation hosted by the Union of Palestinian Women's Committees in Ramallah. The Anti-War Committee website described the delegation:

Hosted by the Palestinian Women's Committee in Ramallah, they will travel to various cities including Jenin, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem. The group will meet with human rights groups, union members, prisoners’ rights advocates, and refugees. Delegates will witness living conditions under military occupation and extend our solidarity to Palestinian activists, organizers and community leaders.

Sundin said the U.S. embassy in Israel has been helpful in getting information, and that, " In fact, it was the embassy that first called to tell me that they are being held." She said that the embassy has not been concerned with helping to get "our desired outcome – the right to enter the country."

The Arrest/Deportation of 3 Twin Cities Women

What we need to ask ourselves is; "Why is Israel so afraid of these three women? What is it trying so desperately to hide?"

Good Move by Israel

"Hosted by the Palestinian Women’s Committee in Ramallah, they will travel to various cities including Jenin, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem. The group will meet with human rights groups, union members, prisoners’ rights advocates, and refugees. Delegates will witness living conditions under military occupation and extend our solidarity to Palestinian activists, organizers and community leaders." I wouldn't let them into the country either. The situation is so tenuous enough in Israel without these potential trouble-makers in the mix. Another group of self-righteous, self-important, idealistic people who are not friends of Israel. Maybe we should thow them out of the US as well.

Women in Israel Jail

How interesting that the writer above signs it as anonymous. This is just the sort of nameless, faceless apologists for Zionist overreaching that props up the insanity that occupies the West Bank and Gaza, utterly without the compassion once demanded of the rest of world against fascist regimes elsewhere during the last half-century or more.

Israel is a sovereign nation, BUT...

Israel is also the number one recipient of US aid with as much as $7 million a day going to Israel. if Americans who have absolutely no record in Israel (these people were traveling to Israel for the first time and got arrested at the airport) are barred from entry, what good is all of that aid? one can understand Sarah and Katrina's response to being told to leave: after all, through their tax dollars, they have personally contributed to Israel. to treat someone a criminal because they care about Palestinians is problematic beyond words. in context, this is another example of Israel's impunity. illegal occupation, illegal settlements, illegal wall, immoral siege on Gaza and a history of ethnic cleansing in Palestine. if Israel bars Americans from entering for one excuse or another: fine, but no more US tax dollars to Israel please.

I was expecting to see

I was expecting to see these types of comments. I really hoped the Daily Planet readers had grown up, though. Keep on invoking the antisemitic image of the greedy, ugly and hooked-nose Jew (the "other"), with the most devious of intentions.

who is anti-semitic?

I see nothing anti-semitic in this article or these comments. The only anti-semitic image was invoked by the person who commented about it. It is not anti-semitic to oppose the actions of the Israeli government. Opposing policies that are unjust, immoral, and illegal under international law is good, common sense. Differentiating between comments that oppose what the Israeli government does and comments that are actually anti-semitic requires critical thinking and maturity. Perhaps the above commenter is the one who needs to grow up. By the way I am a Jew who opposes Zionism.

Julie

Dont forget the horns and tails. Very predictable comments from a poulation that staticaly speaking has more than its share of " issues " I know of what I speak as I have to be around them for many years, keeping my mouth shut.

Right?

“our desired outcome – the right to enter the country.” No one has a right to enter any country they're not a citizen of. The country has the right to allow them in or not.

Israel has no right

They were the invited guests of Palestinian groups in the West Bank. Israel has no right to deny them entry and treat them like criminals, while controlling the borders of land it is occupying illegally. The Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza is illegal and immoral. Israel's supporters should be ashamed of the crimes being committed against Palestinians.

Do-gooder grannies kicked to the curb...

This is exactly the desired outcome. If they'd been permitted entry, there'd be no story. These grannies are simply useful tools. This was a publicity stunt to promote their cause. How dare the Israelis deny passage to sweet little old ladies from Pasadena (the burbs) merely there to "help" the Palestinians? These grannies however belong to organizations (WAMM & the AWC) which do not recognize Israel's right to exist and which condone armed Palestinian rebellion (aka, Palestian terrorism) on Israelis and Jews. Btw Israeli-Arabs initially welcomed these international solidarity activists believing they would help them, but have since quietly sought the help of Israeli-Jews to make these activists go away. Their confrontative tactics have only made the situation worse, more violent, expecially among their youth. I often wonder if groups like WAMM/AWC aren't pushing their own patronnizing agenda in "helping" the poor downtrodden people of the world.

Black and White?

The process that goes into denying entry, and forced deportation is much more complex than one person’s hunch and then the “racist Israeli government” sending someone away. As someone that has been detained entering Israel multiple times, for multiple reasons, I can assure you that this process is very lengthy, and thorough. What happens when Israel publishes their full process for letting people enter the country? Then people with ill intentions can work the system, and make the government “buy” their stories, to enter the country. If you want to speak about the Palestinian people and repression, you should take a look at Hamas and to a lesser extent, Fatah. The treatment of the Palestinians by Hamas is disgusting, and in that sense, I absolutely think we need to work towards freeing Palestine. To the brave women from Minnesota, I implore you to look not only look at the picture you see on the surface, but look at the underlying causes for this conflict. Those that are part of the anti-war and anti-military groups, look at numerous peace treaties and peace offerings Israel has proposed to the Palestinian people, in return for the 2nd Intifada, or continued rocket attackers with a renewed vow to wipe Israel off the face of the earth in a fiery revenge (according to Hamas’s charter). No one wants peace more than Israel. Do you have children? Every Israeli parent sends their children to the army to risk their lives. Don’t you think that is enough of an incentive to work for peace? I think, hope, and pray that we can work towards a lasting peace, but to get there I think both sides need to come to the bargaining table, recognize each other’s struggle and right to exist as a free people, and then and only then will we have peace. Thanks Shawn Minneapolis, MN
