NEWS DAY | HERC decision delayed

July 24, 2009
In a surprise move, the HERC garbage burner's request to increase the amount of garbage burned was put on hold for the moment. Covanta and Hennepin County officials told the Minneapolis City Council Zoning and Planning Committee that they will be going to the state for changes to the burner's air emissions permit before seeking local approval for increased burning. The city Planning Commission had already denied the application for a 21 percent increase in burning.

According to the Star Tribune, "state officials may be reconsidering an earlier determination that further environmental review for the expansion isn't needed."

News with attitude, mostly from MN but with occasional forays abroad.News Day summarizes, links to, and comments on reports from news media around the world, with particular attention to Minnesota news.

HERC burner

Good one. Covanta and the Hennepin County want to get a change to their permit at the Minn. Pollution Control Agency before they seek permission from Minneapolis. Hmmmmm. what change are they seeking? Looser controls to their already permission to pollute our fair state? Should be an interesting process. Neighbors Against the Burner, Minneapolis Neighbors for Clean Air , Anti Herc Alliance and lots of other neighborhoods and many Minneapolis Legislators will not allow further pollution. Maybe the toxin spewing beast will be shut down. We have a lot more science that shows the madness of burning garbage than 20 years ago when we let this thing get built. First we stop the expansion and then we shut it down. I think that is the best plan.

The "HERC Burner Horriffic"

The HERC burner already compromises livability and public health downtown and wherever the wind blows. Biomass combustion, to say nothing of torching garbage, is hazardous to human health and the environment because of the black carbon soot it emits and nanoparticles that are too small to be contained.. Even so called "clean wood" is not clean once it is burned. How can more trash or more wood burning be justified when it is anything but clean energy, marketed under the blanket of renewable "green energy"? To promote the burner expansion as eco-friendly is greenwashing---distorting the truth for profit at the expense of taxpayers, our water supply and all living things in its wake. Black carbon soot is increasingly implicated in global warming. Just look it up online.at www.burningissues.org. In fact, the frenzy to burn biomass is causing our planet to burn out faster than predicted. Please let your city and state representatives know that re-use and recycling is a far healthier alternative for waste managemen.
