Giving thanks and giving back

November 20, 2008

This Thanksgiving, families throughout the Twin Cities will gather at the table and be thankful for what they have, despite the rough economic climate. But Thanksgiving can also be a time for people to help those less fortunate themselves: here is a list of ways you can help on Thanksgiving Day and beyond.

• Feed people — Aeon, Simpson Housing Services , and the Salvation Army all have opportunities to serve meals on Thanksgiving. You can also donate a food basket to Our Savior’s Housing (call Maryellen Skan at 612-872-4193 ext 25) or a Thanksgiving bag to Volunteers of America (contact Kristin Cook at 952-945-4039 or kcook@voamn.org). If preparing food is not your forte, you can simply donate non-perishable goods or cash to the Neighborhood House food drive.

• Drive and deliver — Meals on Wheels (call Lee Beecroft: 651-699-5404), Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly, and Store to Door (651-642-1892) are all looking for people to help out bringing food to those who are unable to drive.

• Work off some of those mashed potato calories while raising money to fight hunger — Catholic Charities, Emergency Food Shelf Network, Greater Twin Cities United Way, Hope for the City, and Hunger Solutions are sponsoring a “Walk to End Hunger” on Thanksgiving Day at the Mall of America. Participants raise pledge money and can form their own teams or walk with one of organizations. Volunteers are needed as well for the event and should call Julie Dyste at 612-340-7443. (And watch for information on the downtown Minneapolis Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning — coming soon!)
• More volunteer opportunities — Hands On Twin Cities and Volunteer Match.

Sheila Regan is a theater artist based in Minneapolis. When not performing or writing, she serves as educational coordinator for Teatro del Pueblo.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK | North Minneapolis We’ll tell you what the judge decides on the flurry of lawsuits around last winter’s Jordan Area Community Council controversy as soon as the decision is made (probably the week of July 6). What do you think about what’s been going on at JACC, in Jordan, and around the Northside? Tell us what you know – and what you think we should be covering.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK | Background checks bar park volunteers
Minneapolis parks have recently tightened enforcement of rules about background checks for volunteers. But does the “systemic bias of the criminal justice system” mean that many African American males will be barred from serving as volunteers? We want to hear your ideas.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK | Hmong Freedom Celebration and Sports Tournament Coming up this weekend! We’re looking for community input about the sports tournament, your experiences at the tournament, how it has changed over the years, what the gathering of Hmong from around the country and around the world means, and any other thoughts you might have about the weekend.

MUSIC | Black Blondie and Foxy Tann knock 'em dead at the Uptown Pride Block Party

The Uptown Pride Block Party on June 26 was an LGBT Pride Week affair, but you didn’t need to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender to get with it. For that matter, you didn’t have to have a dime in your pocket. All you had to bring was the willingness to enjoy a damned good time. MORE »

MOVIES | Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in Public Enemies: Michael Mann doing what he does best: Austin Kennedy – I don’t mind independent pictures using HD video ‘cause they don’t have enough money for film, but when a major studio is making a multi-million dollar picture (and a period piece at that), shoot the friggin’ thing on film.
