Banners on Broadway in North Minneapolis

Photos by Ariah Fine

October 24, 2008
"It would get people's attention." said Tracina Coward of the banners on display along West Broadway in North Minneapolis. Tracina is the youth co-chair of the Youthrive/Peace Jam event that took place last April. In looking for ideas that would help "make it a movement and not just a regular project," Peace Jam collaborated with Juxtaposition Arts on the public art project.

"Trust, Listen, Determine, Share" These are just some of the themes displayed on the artistic banners on a section of Broadway between Aldrich and Girard. The banners seek to reflect the diversity in the community. The artistic work on the banners was done coordinated by artists from Juxtaposition and painted by high school students during the Peace Jam event last April.

Peace Jam focused on, "Making Friends of Your Enemies," one of ten Global Calls to Action of the Peace Jam movement. It was also the topic of Archbishop Desmond Tutu's talk as the main speaker for the event. The banners will be on display from now until April 2009 when the next Peace Jam event will occur.
