Peace Is Our Way in North Minneapolis
Peace Is Our Way, an event co-sponsored by Domestic Abuse Project, Family and Children's Service, NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center, Plymouth Christian Youth Center, Prevent Child Abuse MN, Tubman Family Alliance, and Eagle's Nest/Women of Nations. Alice Lynch of Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota was the MC for the event. Councilman Don Samuels made it out to the event and shared some serious words as well.
"There are people who are living in virtual slavery, right within the walls of their own home." said Samuels, speaking of the impact of domestic violence. He encouraged youth to stand up against abuse and get help, both for themselves or others that they see. A young boy from KIPP Academy shared a powerful poem about losing his older brother to gun violence.
With well over forty people in attendance the event was a rousing success. Dinner and door prizes were provided by Prevent Child Abuse MN. A number of the organizations set up information tables containing information on where to seek help when faced with domestic violence. The evening closed with local spoken word artist, Tish Jones, sharing a moving piece about helping family escape domestic abuse.
