Minnesota judicial races: Evangelical Supreme Court candidate tells anti-Muslim correspondent ‘We speak the same language’

October 22, 2008

Deborah Hedlund, a candidate for the Minnesota Supreme Court, received an anti-Muslim email from a campaign vendor, Matt Look, that said, “Can Muslims Be Good Americans?” the Pioneer Press reports. The email continued, “Perhaps we should be suspicious of all Muslims in this country. They obviously cannot be both ‘good’ Muslims and good Americans. … And Barack Hussein Obama, a Muslim, wants to be our President? You have GOT to be kidding! Wake up America!”

In response, Hedlund inadvertently replied to all recipients saying, “Matt, We speak the same language. And I still need to let voters know they have a choice to ‘Seek Justice, Vote For Experience’ for the Minnesota Supreme Court.”

Hedlund is challenging Justice Lorie Gildea for a seat on the Minnesota Supreme Court. She has a rich history in evangelical Christian circles having taught at St. Paul’s Northwestern College, an evangelical Baptist college, and she attends the evangelical Wayzata Free Church. Hedlund has received the support of EdWatch (PDF), a religious right group so extreme that they accused Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty of being “pro-homosexual.”

Hedlund says she doesn’t know whether Obama is a Muslim or not. “I have no idea what he is. My level of information about the presidential candidates would not fill a thimble,” she told the Pioneer Press. Obama is a Christian.

Hedlund said she didn’t read the email before replying to it and simply meant that she agreed with a deal she and Look has reached on lawn signs. “I disavow it,” she said. “I didn’t have anything to do with that.”

Her opponent, Gildea, was appointed by Gov. Pawlenty in 2006.

Would this judge believe her own story if it came up in court?

She says “we speak the same language” about a contract to buy signs? And do we really want someone this out of touch judging us?

Take in ALL the facts before you judge

Stealth Republican Party politics and electronics Hedlund may not be savvy with, but this judge knows the law and follows it. Now, if that makes her unpopular, then doing her job well is what makes her unpopular. Check out the debate on Mpls Mirror that her opponent failed to show up for. Check out Hedlund’s website to see that those who are judging her so harshly are doing so prematurely. BUT ABOVE ALLFIND OUT THE FACTS BEFORE YOU JUDGE (as she does in her court room – I can personally attest to that) – AND find them out for yourself – not second OR third hand through the rumor mill.

P.S. Keeping the elitists in power is what Gildea stands for – check that out.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK | North Minneapolis We’ll tell you what the judge decides on the flurry of lawsuits around last winter’s Jordan Area Community Council controversy as soon as the decision is made (probably the week of July 6). What do you think about what’s been going on at JACC, in Jordan, and around the Northside? Tell us what you know – and what you think we should be covering.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK | Background checks bar park volunteers
Minneapolis parks have recently tightened enforcement of rules about background checks for volunteers. But does the “systemic bias of the criminal justice system” mean that many African American males will be barred from serving as volunteers? We want to hear your ideas.

We’re looking for community input about the sports tournament, your experiences at the tournament, how it has changed over the years, what the gathering of Hmong from around the country and around the world means, and any other thoughts you might have about the weekend.

The Uptown Pride Block Party on June 26 was an LGBT Pride Week affair, but you didn’t need to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender to get with it. For that matter, you didn’t have to have a dime in your pocket. All you had to bring was the willingness to enjoy a damned good time. MORE »
