City Hall forum on RNC

September 22, 2008
On Wednesday evening, September 24, St. Paul city council member Dave Thune hopes to bring together five groups of people to talk about what happened at the RNC. The forum will include discussion of police action, Thune says, but will go beyond that to discuss the impact of the RNC on business, residents, and observers, as well as demonstrators, peacekeepers and medics.

Wednesday's event will not be an open forum. Thune has invited representatives from "regular citizens," peace marchers and organizers, journalists, business, and the police. Each invited speaker will have three to five minutes to speak his or her piece. That will take about three hours, Thune says.

Thune is concerned about police action, which he observed from multiple vantage points throughout the week. Before the Republican National Convention (RNC), Thune says, he talked to St. Paul assistant police chief Matt Bostrom. There would be a pile of peaceful protesters. Some would choose civil disobedience -- these would be given a choice of leaving or getting arrested. Anyone who broke windows would get arrested immediately.

"Somewhere along the line," says Thune, "that plan was abandoned."

Thune is also concerned about lack of planning that left St. Paul businesses walled off from convention-goers, and about the impact of the convention on the city's residents and reputation.

Everyone is welcome to the public forum, Thune says. The forum will be held in the city council chambers, but overflow spaces have been set up and the event will also be televised on cable access Channel 18.

Others who want to have input into the post-convention analysis are invited to email dave.thune@ci.stpaul.mn.us. Comments have already run hot and heavy, including death threats to Thune himself. Some of the comments on the E-Democracy Forum express the high passions still felt over the RNC.

The hospitals representitive noted lack of access, lock downs for unstated reasons, Nancy Brown noted that it not a crime to report on news events in view of the number reporters arrested, and commented on the * attitude of the planners of the RNC and in embedding reporters like it was Irag in St. Paul and where is the rational? The question of who is a reporter and the attitude of planners (* attitude of "Oh there not real reporters") in that regard was questioned. The excess force in number of police to handle event, outsiders policing St. Paul during the RNC. Only a few people had seen the Ramsey County sheriff's warrents signed by Judge Joann Smith. the question was raised why Ramsey county Sheriff was at the Rage Concert in hennipin county. The RNC was noted as the biggest police action in the state of MN and needed to be vetted. Vedeos were shown with some new footage I had not seen on you tube.People not resisting or just observing and people forced in to pens was mentions more then a few times, Free Speech zone and access to convention hall deligates gentile and benign and inaccessable. Chuck Lentz noted the city got hijacked by outsiders, Only one person called cops by the p word, Coleen Rowley spoke as former FBI agent, Elliot Hughes spoke emotionally for a long time about treatment in jail which was like a gitmo horror story, had a list of items he like in place and presented CD's to chair of the community meeting, Legal eagles noted political literature confiscated in illegal preemtive raids and raids at wrong address. Heffilfinger's withdrawal request due to conflict of interest brought loudest audience response of the evening, A Walker Style investigation was suggested. Rich Neumister spoke to his being a change agent and data recovery and retention issues, Police policy and police searches, warrent and actual proceedure match up and elected officials were on the agenda but none but Thune and he acted as chair and only one or two quiet reminders about protocal for the event There was a Gavel at the beginning of the meeting and a quiet ending.
