Learn basic journalism skills for use in community and neighborhood newsletters, non-profit publications, journalism web sites and blogs, podcasts, and other citizen journalism formats. Basic journalism skills will be covered, including: essential reporting techniques, basic story structure, adopting a journalistic mindset, how to conduct interviews, writing tips, how to write a column bout issues and trends, writing opinion columns.
Lunch with a Journalist: Mary Turck

Come hear from Mary Turck, editor of the Twin Cities Daily Planet at our series “Lunch with a Journalist.” This monthly brown bag gives the community a chance to interface with professional journalists working for change in the Twin Cities. In addition to editing the Daily Planet, Mary has reported on pressing local issues such as Rock Tenn and the Republican National Convention.
Arts Writing—From Pitch to Publication

Nonprofits need to get the word out – about your issues, your concerns, your programs, your work, and your triumphs. If you want to be more effective in getting your message out, “Media Strategies for Nonprofits” can help. This workshop introduces the basics, from news releases and press lists to Web pages and blogs. Each participant will receive handouts and a CD with sample documents and contact information for local media.
