Queertopia: A cabaret celebration of queer love

June 25, 2008
Queertopia is a theatrical event featuring a fantastic array of local queer acts, sharing a single stage for three nights only. From poetry and breakdancing to hula hooping and musical entertainment, you won't be disappointed.

Queertopia, a theatrical event presented by Outward Spiral Theatre Company from June 26-28 at Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Ave. S., Minneapolis. For tickets ($15) and information, call (612) 871-4444.

The show is curated by Jeffry Lusiak and Morgan Thorson of Outward Spiral Theatre Company, which invites audiences to "an eclectic night of performance that's determined to put a little more LOVE into your PRIDE." Outward Spiral is a queer, multi-cultural, and provocative theater company whose mission is to educate, entertain, and illuminate the GLBT experience on stage. "I want to support this expression of living queer and experimentation, anyway I can," says Thorson.

Here's a sneak peek of what's in store for you at this year's Queertopia.

Spoken word will be presented by Minneapolis poet and writer Andrea Jenkins. B-Girl Seoul will show off her breakdancing. Also showcasing their skills will be dancers Nicolas Lincoln and Jerome Lee Barnes. Other performers include Randy Dandy, Charles Schuminski, Molly Van Avery, Lisa Ganser (presenting her film Pussy Pirates), and Empowered Expressions.

One exciting group to watch is the Hula Troop Nordeast. Founded in the spring of 2007 by aspiring stage performer Trisha Harms and filmmaker Tyler Jensen, the troop has since added two more talented hoopers: Kirsten Koehler and Jesse Siegel. The troop has performed with local queer indie filmmaker Lisa Ganser at the Flaming Film Festival. Over the three nights of Queertopia, the Hula Troop will perform a new hula piece and shoot a new video. "There will be loose hoops, swinging hips, and plenty of surprises, sure to cause mass hoop-hysteria," promise the troop. They'll be selling their signature brand of homemade hula hoops, so audience members inspired by the performance can hoop it up at home.
