Public hearings on "Missing Link" start June 18

Three upcoming community meetings will provide a space for citizen input on the route for the “mising link” of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway. When completed, the missing link will connect East River Parkway with St. Anthony Parkway. Three public hearings in the next few weeks offer opportunities to find out more, or to voice opinions on the currently-proposed route:
• Wednesday, June 18, 6:30 p.m. at Minneapolis Park and Rec Board Headquarters, 2117 West River Road, Minneapolis.
• Monday, June 23, 6:30 p.m. at Van Cleve Park, 901 15th Avenue SE, Minneapolis.
• Tuesday, July 1, 6:30 p.m. at Windom Park, 2251 Hayes Street NE

The currently-recommended route begins at Stinson and St. Anthony Parkway and heads east through St. Anthony along Gross National Golf Course. It follows Industrial Boulevard to East Hennepin Avenue, Weeks Avenue and 29th Avenue SE. It passes underneath the Burlington Northern railroad tracks to Kasota Avenue SE and bridges over the rail yard to connect with the new Granary Road proposed by the City of Minneapolis. It then follows 27th Avenue SE near the University of Minnesota and ends at East River Parkway.

The study phase for the three-mile “missing link” began in June 2007. A 21-member Citizen Advisory Committee established criteria to help determine the best and most feasible area to build the missing Grand Rounds link. Specific recommendations include enhancement of recreational opportunities, protection and enhancement of the environment, and creation of economic benefits.

“Currently utilized by industrial businesses, the route would create the desired recreational and regional amenities,” said Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board project manager Nick Eoloff. “It’s an eco-business plan that incorporates business and economic development within a park setting.”

A final decision on the “missing link” route is expected this summer and construction will start as soon as the necessary funds become available
