June 12, 2008

We are happy to report — make that very happy to report — that the Twin Cities Daily Planet won the Page One award for Best Web Site (Independent) from the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists chapter at an awards ceremony held at St. Paul’s Town and Country Club on June 12. The Daily Planet also won honors for a single news story (Preserving the Great Lakes by Anna Pratt) and for our New Minnesotans Speak blog. MinnPost and the Minnesota Monitor (now the Minnesota Independent) were also honored for their Web sites and stories. The Monitor won first place story for Annarama! Anna Nicole Smith and the Experience Newspaper by Paul Schmelzer and best newsroom blog for EricBlackInk.

Judges praised the “great design” of the Daily Planet Web site, citing “local content that is relevant…sleek and colorful design.”

New Minnesotans Speak is a multi-author Daily Planet blog featuring voices of new Minnesotans. Many of them participate as part of English Language Learning classes, either in high school or in adult literacy programs. Along with the Daily Planet’s newest blog partner, Hispanic Fanatic and other TC Daily Planet blogs, New Minnesotans Speak offers a variety of voices to Daily Planet readers.

Things People Say

Readers sound off on disco, the Unabomber, and Santa Christ

“If there was any deep division in the music scene in 1977, it wasn’t people scratching their heads at less than stellar releases from Kansas, Foreigner, Styx, or Steely Dan and Neil Young, it was the demise of live music as disco came to prominence. I could make the argument that Kansas, Nugent and other arena acts GAINED fans because people who hated disco REALLY hated disco (myself included).”

“John Jansen’s comments made me think of some of the bad things white people have done. Timothy McVeigh! Terry Nichols! The Unabomber! Not to mention almost all the serial killers in the U.S.! And all those Arab terrorists — they’re Caucasian! I just don’t think we can afford to have white people running this country. They are way too dangerous.”
-comment on “The Battle for Pine County”

“I really used to be amazed how these individuals could be so blatant about who they really are, and yet have their assemblies still pour money into their pockets so they can live like movie stars…and then you have those who are of the new faith: CASHIANS and followers of Santa Christ.”
